Services and Programs

The OPL Children's Department provides numerous services for children and parents. Teachers, please check out our Teacher Corner [4] for details on special services the library can offer to you.

Advice: Looking for a good book? The OPL children's staff will be happy to help you find a title you will enjoy. We will also gladly recommend titles according to reading level and interest.

Learning Station: Families can enjoy toys, puzzles and puppets in the Learning Station area. In addition, computers with educational games for preschool children can be found here. These computers were funded through a grant from the Wayne County Community Foundation.

Story Times: Offered at a variety of times for ages 9 months through 5 years. Holiday and special story times are offered on occasion, as well as creative programs for children in grades K-2. See the Story Time page [5] for information on the latest session.

Bag A Books: Check out our collection of mesh backpacks which contain books and fun focusing on a specific theme. Bags are available in preschool, primary and intermediate levels and include at least two books and one toy. Bags must be returned to Orrville Public Library and may not be reserved.

Displays: Do you have a collection you'd like to display? Children may arrange to have their collection in our display case for one month. Our young patrons love to see what their friends are collecting! Call the Children's Department at 330-683-1065 to sign up.

Programs: The Children's Department at OPL is continuously developing relevant, educational, and fun programming for children and youth. Check our calendar [6] for current programming.

Summer Reading Program: From June through the end of August, fun and creative incentives are provided to keep school-aged children reading all summer long. Students who have just finished kindergarten all the way through high school can participate in various programs. Check out our SRP page [7] for more information.

Tel-A-Story: By dialing 330-683-2222, children can call our Tel-A-Story line. They may then choose among several titles and listen to a three-minute story. These stories are changed monthly.

Read to Your Bunny: Babies born at Aultman Orrville Hospital [8] receive a certificate to bring in to OPL for a free book and bib. These books are provided by community service organizations.

Library Show: Once a month, Armstrong Cable [9] films a short segment with a children's librarian from Orrville Public Library sharing fun and creative ideas on crafts, books and activities to help kids get ready to read. OPL children's librarians also enjoy simply inspiring parents on ideas for having some family fun! "The Library Show" plays on Armstrong Cable, channel 4, every weekday at 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., and weekends at 9:00 a.m. It is also available for viewing anytime through Armstrong's Video-on-Demand.

Summer Reading for Kids

The library is delighted to provide multiple prizes, incentives and programs throughout the summer for children who participate in the annual summer reading program. The program is open to students who have just completed kindergarten through those entering 6th grade.

The theme for 2012 is Whoooooo's Reading at the Library. The fun begins June 2 with opening day and runs through August.

The library also has summer reading for teens [10], summer reading for adults [11] and don't forget about our year-round brain freeze program [12] for students in grades 5-8.

Teacher Corner

The OPL Children's Department is happy to partner with area educators by providing these special services to teachers.

Teacher Cards: Teachers in the greater Wayne County area may qualify for a teacher card. See our Teacher Card Policy [33] for details.

Class Visits: Doing a class research project together? Bring your class to the library! We can help your students learn how to research a subject via our library resources - computers, reference materials, and more. Or, we can bring a stack of books to your classroom to share and speak briefly about the materials available to them at the library for their personal research.

Subject/Author Collections: Need extra material to expand that unit you're teaching? Call and let us know what you need and we will put together a collection of materials. If we do not have everything you need, we can request what is needed. Just have your library card ready to provide us with your number. We'll have your collection ready and waiting at our desk or drive-up window.

Books in a Box: Orrville Public Library is able to provide our teachers with up to 36 copies of the same title for us in the classroom. Titles for K-8th grade reading levels are available for four weeks. We will even deliver the box of books to your classroom (Orrville Schools only - teachers in the surrounding communities can pick up their box at the library).

PAL (Play and Learn) Kits: These collections of books, music and educational activities based on a common theme are for the use of those who teach young children in preschool or kindergarten.
