Donut Seeds

 by Michael Schafer

My mom was working in the garden,

Planting peas and beans and corn.

Food I’ve never liked to eat,

Since the day I was born.

I thought to myself,

What this garden needs,

Is something that’s good to eat,

So I brought out the donut seeds.

Donuts would be fun to grow.

Donuts would be a real treat.

What could be better,

Than a fresh picked donut to eat?

I was planting my donut seeds,

Looking forward to a good crop.

My mom saw what I was doing,

And she hollered, “Stop.”

What I had just planted,

She said never grows.

Those weren’t donut seeds,

I was planting Cheerios.
